Hello, I bought a Seagate external hard drive ( A/ref=pdybha2?encoding=UTF8&psc=1&re) and I when I tried to format and encrypt it, I didn't find the encrypt option neither in the Disk Utility nor in Finder as many tutorials show. I'm using High Sierra btw. I also noticed something weird when I used diskutil list in terminal. How is it in AppleHFS even tho it's not an SSD? And what does the.
mean in.2.0 TB? I have 2 older external disks and they do have the encrypt options unlike this one. /dev/disk2 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: FDiskpartitionscheme.2.0 TB disk2 1: AppleHFS SilverSeagate 2.0 TB disk2s1 Any idea how I can get it encrypted? Also is it a bad idea - from reliability point of view - to encrypt the whole disk instead of creating an encrypted image? (provided I won't forget the password). Thanks in advance. ^ After following Pavel's GUID partition advice, you could also refer to the following if you'd like to use our free software to encrypt your drive.
Seagate has evaluated current product lines to determine which ones will be supported in macOS 10.12. Older drives that are not listed here may work, but have not been tested. Software not listed below is not supported on macOS 10.12.
Just make sure in any event to be overly cautious with keeping your encryption passwords/keys extremely available. Back up passwords and keys. Then write it on a piece of paper, enclose it in an envelope and lock it in a biometric safe which only Morgan Freeman can open and read in the event of other measures failing. You can never be too vigilant about backups. The reason for this is we've seen situations where people forget their encryption information or lose it, and they want some sort of resource where they can just do something simple like call up support and get the key, which would render encrypting drives in the first place somewhat pointless if you think about it.
On the downside, we don't know how to get in touch with Morgan Freeman. Seagate Technology Official Forums Team.
